We arrived into Barcelona and had a lovely practice on the fabulous clay in the famous Real Club de Tenis where the Barcelona Open is played each year. We attended the Captains Meeting where we drew GB in the first round which was a reasonable draw. We attended dinner that evening in the Polo Club where the Mens Potter Cup event is played. DAY 1: Play started at the Real Club de Tenis on Thursday the 24th at 9am - Patricia D’Arcy (Line 2 Singles) played against the Line 2 Player from GB, Scottish national Eilidh Smith. Patricia lost 6.2, 3.6, 6.3 in a long match. Lisa O’Shea then went onto play English national and the British team captain Leyla Ogan, Lisa lost 6.0, 6.2. After a lovely lunch with the British Team, we went back out on the Clay courts in the Spanish sun to play doubles against Leyla Ogan and Debbie Hale. Lisa and Patricia lost 7.5, 6.2, losing the tie 3.0 to Britain. DAY 2: Play again started at 9am in the Real Club de Tenis in the slightly overcast but warm Spanish weather against France. Patricia D’Arcy beat Isabelle Crudo of France, in a tight 3 setter, winning 10.4 in the Champ tie break. As rain was forecast the matches were reduced to a Championship tiebreak in the deciding set. Lisa played the number one from France Marine Piriou who had beaten Germany’s Manon Kuse (current World Number one O40) the previous day. Lisa lost her match and unfortunately Ireland were unable to play the doubles to decide the tie. We were invited to dinner at the Real Club de Tenis Thursday evening where the Ladies and Mens teams enjoyed a lovely 3 course meal. Day 3 - due to rain play was suspended until 4pm. Ireland played Spain B, Patricia D’Arcy went out to play Pauline Rodriquez of Spain, the match was 3.0 to Patricia and the rain suspended play indefinitely. The only matches that were completed that were the two finals, which were reduced to a Pro set (first to 8), singles only. The German ladies beat the Italians in the final 2.0, as the other matches were not played we were able to watch the finals which was nice. The presentation was then made following the Celebratory dinner at the Real Club de Polo which completed the event. The dinner was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
