IC Ireland vs IC Denmark 2025

A glorious weekend in the Danish sunshine

On a gloriously sunny weekend in June, the Irish team, led by captain Jerry Sheehan descended on the Danish capital of Copenhagen for the the first ever fixture between Ireland and our Danish friends. At the centenary in Wimbledon last year, our men lost a close tussle with the Danes and we were all in high spirits heading over to Copenhagen.

Upon arrival on Friday evening we were greeted by sunshine and temperatures in the high 20s. Perfect for some clay court tennis (suncream was at the ready). But first, in customary IC weekend fashion, we started with some team bonding (drinks by the harbour), a beautiful dinner and our first trip to the infamous Andys Bar. With maybe one beer too many consumed it was off to bed to dream of clay court tennis against the Danes.

An early start on the Saturday to get to Tennis Club B93, a beautiful club in the north of city. With our initial public transport struggles out of the way, we had a lovely breakfast put on by our Danish hosts and the serious matter of the tennis got underway. In the splitting sunshine, the quality of tennis was only matched by the volume of suncream being applied by the Irish team! There was lots of long rallies, close matches and a high level of tennis throughout the morning, with some notable wins for Jerry and Lisa Lawlor in a third set match tie break and David Murphy and Liam Croke.

After a lovely traditional Danish lunch it was back out tied at 4 matches apiece to try and crown a winner. Special mention at this point to Gary Kilduff who spent 90% of the day grinding through 3 matches in singles, doubles and mixed. At the end of it, the Danes were a little bit too strong in home conditions and they finished the day 8-7 winners with the matches played in great competition and even greater spirits - a true reflection of what IC tennis is all about.

This wasn't the end of the weekends entertainment and both teams traded in their whites for slightly more formal attire with Irish Ambassador to Denmark, Elizabeth McCullough, sister to our President Conor, kindly inviting the two teams to the residence for a reception. What followed was a truly memorable evening with amazing food, amazing company and lots of stories shared.

A Sunday of sightseein in Copenhagen followed with the highlight being a boat tour around the harbour that showed the team the sights and sounds of an amazing city. We still had time for a last Danish lunch by the iconic Nyhavn harbour before the team departed on various flights back to Ireland and the UK.

It's safe to say that the first fixture between Ireland and Denmark was a resounding success and we look forward to hosting the Danes in 2026. Thanks to the whole team for an amazing weekend.
