IC of Ireland Prentice Cup Match July 2014 - Carrickmines
The IC of Ireland hosted the US Prentice Cup team at the beautiful Carrickmines Croquet & Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday July 27th. The US Prentice Cup is a combined Harvard and Yale team that has been touring the UK and Ireland every four years since the 1920s. Ireland has been a key leg of the tour since at least the 1950s and Carrickmines has long been a favored destination. In the past the US team even participated in the Carrickmines Open Week but on this occasion the IC of Ireland was the opposition for a US styled college “dual match” consisting of six singles and 3 doubles.
This is becoming a regular and much anticipated fixture for the IC of Ireland as the teams played four years ago during the 2010 tour. On that occasion the US Prentice Cup team narrowly came out on top after a hard fought match. The 2014 re-match was equally competitive and involved a high standard of tennis from both sides. The two teams were evenly matched with the IC team spearheaded by recently retired professional and former Irish number 1, Conor Niland, as well as former Davis Cup player Barry King. While the Prentice Cup team had Harvard number one player, All American and recent NCAA semi-finalist, Denis Nguyen in their lineup.
Following some close and hard fought matches, the home team got off to a solid start and took a 4-2 lead after the singles with wins at 2, 4, 5 and 6 singles. After a nice lunch, provided by Carrickmines and the IC of Ireland, the home team resumed where they left off and clinched the match by quickly winning the number 1 and number 2 doubles.
Post-match, both teams enjoyed a few drinks in Carrickmines’ newly refurbished bar before the US Prentice Cup team, accompanied by a number of the more adventurous Irish team, headed up to the famous Johnny Foxes for the beginning of a longer night.
It was a great day that was superbly well organized and accommodated by Carrickmines C<C. Special thanks must go to Pat Crowe, Gillian Walker, Denise Mason and all of the Carrickmines members for hosting the two teams and for graciously giving up their club and courts for what turned out to be a wonderfully sunny afternoon.
Special thanks also to Declan Heavey, Noel Sheridan and Conor McCullough from the IC of Ireland who helped organize the event.
